From the Director – September

This is kind of early for me, only the 7th of the month.  Boy, are we glad that school is back in session.  I spoke at Muskego El on Tuesday, September 3rd at their program welcoming the kids back to a new and improved school building.  Mr. Peterson put together a very nice video with the changes and featuring the school garden that the kids planted and their families watered, weeded, and harvested for the food pantry all summer long.  We received over 50 pounds of produce from their garden and more will be coming this fall.  We have also received produce from the Community Garden planted by the Historical Society at the Settlement Center and tons of produce from private gardens.  I can’t thank everybody enough for the donations.  You have no idea how great it is to be able to give fresh grown produce to our families.  With school back in session now we can expect help from the scouts and other organizations with the food drives that they hold.  We had a very lean summer again; however, we will start to have an abundance of donations again.  As always thank you for your support and keep us in mind when you do your grocery shopping.

From the Director – August

August is already half over but it feels like September.  I won’t complain about the cool nights.  The electric bill is smaller when the air conditioning doesn’t have run.  Two more weeks and school is back in session.  Then we go back to having regular donations from the fund raisers at schools.  And the kids won’t be at home to eat you out of house and home.  Families at Muskego El have been bringing over fresh produce from the garden that the students planted in May.  Fresh garden grown vegetables is always appreciated so please keep us in mind when you gardeners have an overabundance.  The Girl Scouts of Sun Lakes Service Unit brought non perishable items to the bus stops for day camp.  Quite a lot of food was donated.  Please continue to keep us in mind when you do your weekly grocery shopping.  We have barrels located at Piggly Wiggly, Pick N Save, and Wal-Mart.  The generosity of the community is awesome.

Boy…I had every intention of getting this out before the 18th of the month.  July is 1/2 done before we know it.  It’s been in the 90’s but a welcomed cool down for the weekend.  When it is so hot precious food money is spent on electricity to run the fans and air conditioners.  We are in the middle of our summer slump.  Hundreds of dollars every week is spent on groceries that are not donated in the barrels.  July’s Jammin’ on Janesville was very good to us.  We had nachos by the library, watermelon donated by Pick N Save by Pick N Save and ice cream by the doors of Pick N Save.  Look for us at the same locations during August’s Jammin.  We are starting to plan our “Back to School Bonanza” for the families served by the food pantry.  It is held every year at the Moose Lodge and we provide a meal, hair cuts for the kids, school supplies, and school appropriate clothes.  Anyone wishing to donate to the cause please e-mail or just call.  As always please keep us in mind while you are grocery shopping.  BP & J is always good when the kids are home for the summer.  Thanks for your generosity.

June…the official start of summer.  It has been 59 and cloudy for 3 days in a row.  I’m sure one of these days it will feel like summer.  Our community has been busy helping the food pantry.  We are just about finished with date checking, sorting and stocking over 8000 pounds of food donated by the Postal Carrier’s “Stamp out Hunger”.  To say it was a huge success is putting it mildly.  Hopefully that food will keep our shelves stocked a couple of weeks into the kid’s summer vacation.  We are starting a collection for winter coats.  There will be a barrel located at Laurie’s Lakeside Cleaners.  A second barrel will be at either Pick N Save or the library with our volunteers for Jammin’ on Janesville.  Laurie will be dry cleaning all of the donated coats for free.  Thanks!!  Speaking of Jammin on Janesville, we will be located at Pick N Save, at the library with Marx Pioneer Inn and at PNC bank.  Come visit us for information, donations, and hand outs for the kids.  Please keep the food pantry in mind when you do your weekly grocery shopping.  We are entering the summer months when the kids are off of school and do not have the school lunch program to give them a balanced meal.  Peanut butter and jelly always make a good lunch.  Enjoy your summer!

I think we finally made it to Spring…trees are budding and flowers blooming.  Typical for Wisconsin 85 degrees one day and 45 degrees the next.  Our biggest food drive of the year is next Saturday, May 11th.  “Stamp out Hunger” is sponsored by the postal carriers.  All you need to do is fill a bag with your items and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to our food pantry.  Hopefully this drive will keep our shelves stocked for a few weeks until we get in to the summer.  Summer is our busiest time with school children home without getting school hot lunches.  Please keep us in mind when you harvest your gardens and go to the grocery store.  Two weeks ago Bay Lane Middle School “Stuffed the Bus” for our pantry.  They filled 1/2 of a school bus.  The food is already gone.  Muskego Elementary has 12 garden plots in the front of the school that will be planted by the students, tended and harvested by their families.  The produce will be donated to our food pantry.  I’m sure this will be an extremely successful project for all. Wow…Spring’s right around the corner.  I think I have been saying that for about 2 months now.  Rainy and 40 for 3 weeks.  The lack of spring only dampens our spirit.  People still need to eat.  We are still servings 60 to 70 families per week.  Let’s pray for good weather on Saturday April 20th because Bay Lane Middle School is “Stuffing the Bus”.  Last year it rained all day.  Please help the kids and support the pantry by taking your non perishable items to Pick N Save and help them set a record.  Saturday May 11th is “Stamp out Hunger” sponsored by the United States Post Office.  You can put your non-perishables out by your mail box and your postal worker will pick up your donation.  It can’t get any easier than that.

We are looking to purchase a commercial refrigerator.  St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will match donations up to $1300 to purchase the new fridge.  So send checks, call or use Pay Pal and our website to make your donation.

Woo Hoo…it is March!!!  Never thought it would get here and that does mean that Spring is right around the corner.  We are busy signing up families for their Easter ham.  We are at 55 already and the sheet has been out for only one week.  Anyone wishing to donate hams please call, with Easter being in March this year we will need them within the next 2 weeks.  We are also in need of a freezer.  Sometime we are able to get things from Feeding America free or at a very good price.  Some of these thinks need to be frozen and it is nice to have the extra space.  Wendy is also looking for coats for kids.  Even though we like to think the season is almost over some of our kids do not have a warm winter coat.  We are getting another 5 to 8 inches of snow tomorrow.  We are looking for someone to sponsor a “Coats for Kids” in the fall to hopefully help the young ones of Muskego who don’t have warm coats.  We are as busy as ever at the pantry.  The scouts, grade schools and high school have been very supportive with food drives.  Please keep up the good work.  Please remember us when you grocery shop. “Scouting for Hunger” is March 23rd put your non perishables out for the Boy Scouts to pick up.

Isn’t the snow beautiful?  Enough already let’s have spring!!!   January was a busy month at the pantry.  We served 357 families and had almost 700 volunteer hours.  We had our first open house on January 22nd.  It was freezing and that was inside the pantry.  Thank you to the approximately 50 people who braved the weather to come see the pantry.  We had refreshments donated from Cousins Subs, Alpine Lanes and Walmart.  We plan on having another open house but next time in the spring or summer.  We are purchasing most of our food again.  There is a food drive going on at the High School until February 15th.  Please fill the barrels to help your neighbors.  The tables are full again at Pick N Save and Piggly Wiggly so please remember to purchase a pre-packaged bag and drop it in our barrel on your way out.  Your donations are necessary to keep the shelves at the pantry stocked.  Thank you for your generousity and keep warm!!

It’s the 2nd week of January.  The Packers are out of the playoffs, Christmas decorations are put away for another year, and all the food that was donated over the holidays is gone.

A BIG thanks to everyone who had food drives and made donations to the food pantry from Thanksgiving through the New Year.  This is our 4th New Year at the pantry so we should be used to the food going so quickly over the holidays.

We received 80 gallons of milk from the Golden Guernsey closed plant.  We are now waiting to see if we can get any cottage cheese or sour cream.  Food for Families was a success where we netted over 3500 pounds of food.  We appreciate everyone who shopped at Piggly Wiggly, Pick N Save or Walmart and dropped it in the barrel.

We are having an open house at the food pantry.  It will be on Tuesday January 22nd from 6pm until 8pm.  There will be refreshments served and tours given.  If you’ve ever wondered where your donation goes….now is the time to find out.  Everybody is welcome!

Our numbers of families served is growing so please remember us when you go grocery shopping.

Another Christmas is upon us.  This is the 4th Christmas for the Muskego Food Pantry.  The children’s Christmas Party for our families will be at the Moose Lodge on Saturday December 8th.  Santa will be there to give gifts to all the good little girls and boys.  We are in the process of getting ham’s for our families for their Christmas dinners.  Our volunteers have been very busy date checking, sorting and stocking all the food that has come in from all your generous donations.  When you are shopping for your family’s Christmas dinner, please remember to pick up a little extra something for the food pantry and drop it in our barrel.  Tis the season that struggling families have to use their food budget for heat bills, car repairs and Christmas presents.  I hope that you and your families have a very Blessed Christmas season.
